2011 Archery Australia National Championships Wrap-up and Lessons Learnt

My events for Nationals 2011 have finished as I am not shooting the clout to be held at Samford tomorrow.  It has been a bit of a mixed week overall for me.  Results wise, they were quite disappointing for me, however they can't be 100% blamed upon any one reason or other in particular.

The first major lesson I learnt is that any changes, no matter how small, will have some affect upon your kit.  I had changed the wraps and fletches on my arrows, and while their vertical height behaviour were the same, their tuning had changed and quite possibly made my arrows weak.  This posed problems for me all week where I attempted to deal with windage issues of not being centered on the sight.  Big lesson learnt.  If you change something, always do a tune.

Shooting wise, I also discovered that while the Carbon Blades do as advertised, they are not fantastic in a bowl swirling wind kind of venue that the Hannay range is at Mt Petrie.  Besides typical left and right push behaviour from the winds, very strange up and down lift/push pressures were experienced by me with the very high winds that came through the venue from a head-on and swirl behaviour (since the range has some interesting wind-channels.

Other things, I was able to shoot reasonably by aiming off during the field course.  I've never really done that before, but I know now that I am capable of doing so if needs be.  I was told that I was canting also in the wind, and either use my sight pin rod to gain a horizontal reference, or stack weights onto the bow to resist the twist from wind push.

I was reasonably okay with the resulting placings at a national championship in that at least I didn't wooden spoon.  But, it is all practice as usual, so back onto the track and more practice for the next event.

Today was the second day of the target championships.  With the miserable effort yesterday and the winds, I was hoping that today would be better overall.  Having set some reasonable windage from yesterday, I was also more confident in being able to group closer to the center of the target at distances.

Putting down the shooting today, I was a bit disappointed with my 90m and 70m results.  While they were overall still better than yesterday, they were much lower than I had hope.  My 50m and 30m results were quite good I felt, with a solid 292 and 327 for the distances respectively.  Those scores are on par with my good shooting levels.

I finished up with a 1086 for today, a 127 point increase from yesterday, but still 100 points down from my personal best range.  But, it was still good experience as I had a lot of frustrating moments, that I now have a better idea on how to control myself to reduce the affect it has on my shooting.

After my miserable attempt at field, I started the target event today.  It wasn't much better.  I managed to set some windage settings for all of the distances and a check of sight settings, so I hope tomorrow will be better. The wind proved to be a bother, and in the end with everything happening, I shot a personal worse for 2011, a 957.  The general scores for the day were also quite low, down about 100 points or so across the board, but with my windage problems, I was down a 200 point bracket, quite disappointing really.  That said, I didn't wooden spoon today...

Sadly today I shot a much worse score than I did yesterday thanks to some variation in my vertical height.  With shadows hanging over targets more due to the brighter day, it was hard to really know where my arrows were going since I didn't have a binocular or monocular to check.  My first 4 targets or so were all quite high in terms of grouping position and this cost me.  I recovered and shot well enough through the end finishing with a mediocre 261 with 16 5's+6's and 4 6's

In terms of overall standings, I would have fallen away (since I haven't seen official results yet).

Its just practice.

Despite the fact that my sight settings for windage/left-right were gone funny, I didn't let it deter me too much.  I shot the field course by aiming off center as best I could, and had some good results.  My vertical height settings were very good, and I clocked in a 298 with 28 5+6's and 6 6's.  Putting that into perspective, I shot a 314 personal best at Liverpool this year, the only time I've really shot a competition field using the 6-ring scoring.

If I can shoot as consistently as I did today tomorrow, and aim off the same, I would be pretty happy with that.

It was practice day, so I shot a variety of distances to set my sight settings for both field and target events.
Unfortunately I didn't feel that my shooting was great today, as I had left/right windage issues preying on my mind.  My releases weren't crash hot either, so overall it was a bit of an iffy day.  I got my sight settings down, but will be struggling with field for points with shots going to the right consistently.  I tried to adjust over but found that at longer distances, the arrows were going to the left.  Adjustment to ensure I was relatively centered for my target distances means my field shots will be off.  But at the end of the day, target is my primary goal, so field results isn't a huge deal.

I have yet to determine the cause of this, and it could be things like bow tuning, my release, changes in arrow weight (changes wraps and fletch type), or my sight rack might be angled... But I doubt I will find the cause now, though I will have a month to look at it before I head to Gainesville, and even then, perhaps get some help from the coaching there.

After using the shot trainer for a little bit, my first few ends of regular shooting were quite explosive, the shot trainer having the right effect upon my shooting.  Clean, crisp, fast shots.  Unfortunately, due to the pain that the straps were causing, I decided to not continue onwards with using it, at least not so close out from Nationals right now.I probably will pull it out to use when away but not today anyway.

Astra Archery Shot Trainer Review

I recently ordered two Shot Trainers from Astra Archery (www.astraarchery.com, though at time of this writing the website is not responding to my request for data, e.g. its down), with the hopes that it would be an improvement upon the old 'formaster' training aid tool that I have used before (albeit my version is a home-made version from cord and seat-belt style material).  Since I lent out my formaster (like much of my gear that I don't currently use lol) I thought I would try this shot trainer, especially since travelling to Brisbane, and later to the US and Canada, it would allow me to train without actually shooting at a range.

The device comes in two sizes, a size 1, and a size 2.  The pdf (from the website) explaining the size and use is massive and clocks in at a whopping 24.3mb, way too big for a sizing pdf, they should look at cutting that down since the quality is a print-proof quality and just simply excessive download size, especially for their server output rate (I have 24MBit ADSL2+ and it took ages... very slow rates).  Something in the range of 1-2mb would be acceptable in my opinion, the image quality isn't really that important so long as people understand how to measure their arms.

So, according to the measurements, I needed a size 2 since my bicep on my right arm is just a touch over 30cm (yeah, I got fat arms lol).  I bought a size 1 and a size 2, simply so that I would have a size 1 available for people that I coach to use/try before they buy one for themselves if they can afford it (shipping is a killer for the item coming across from the US).

Presentation upon opening the packaging was quite pleasing.  The shot trainer is flat-packed in a clear zip-lock bag with a high quality printed manual on its use, repeating content that is visible on the website.  The lot is sealed with a two-staple cardboard top label showing Astra Archery logo and details, and marking that it is a size 1/2.  One packet had a hanger hook plastic tab attached, while the other didn't.

Opening it and taking it out, the slim size of the shot trainer size 2 is quite surprising.  I had no doubts that it would stretch out.  There is a grey striped side and a black side, with a diamond marking the center of the elbow position, with straps stitched onto the black side.  The stitching is a cross-weave/diamond pattern and seems quite solid, no fear of them coming apart.  A metal spring clip was attached to a buckle-adjustable strap and a pre-tied cord, they call a parachute cord.

In terms of wearing it, there were no distinctive markings on which side was which, in the sense of, which end to slip your arm into.  While one side has a long elastic end, and one a short, not thinking, I actually managed to try to wear it the wrong way round.  Off it went, and around the right way, with the longer elastic end being the wrist end of the sleeve.  it is actually a bit fiddly to get the grey diamond into the elbow fold.  Bunching it up and working it on like a sock does work, but you have to wiggle it about a little to get it to sit right.

Putting the cord around my bowstring was no problem at all.  Adjusting the buckle strap was easy enough, and clipping it onto the sleeve strap was just fine too.  So I gave it a literal shot.  Drawing without an arrow, engage at anchor, release, snap!  As described in the manual, a bit of stretch occurred as my adjusted approximate 1 inch gap stretched out.  I re-adjusted, and tried again.  Snap!  Well, I discovered that it wasn't particularly comfortable.  The cable/strap connection didn't cut across my neck or face, but rather the strap section around my elbow and arm on the sleeve.

Unlike the formaster that I had, and other variants of similar devices, the width of the straps on the sleeve are very very slim, not wide at all.  Taking the full strain of the bow (for me, 42lb) onto the two straps made them dig in quite considerably.  I wasn't sure if it was just because I wasn't used to it, so I tried a few more shots.  My conclusion with the straps however stands, not very comfortable at all!  They claim you could train with this, 20-40 shots before shooting, every day.  Well, if you did more than 40, you'd possibly find yourself hurting quite a bit where the straps are....

Now, going back to the sleeve itself.  I think perhaps they might want to consider a size 3.  The olefin stretch material around the bicep is fine, its a little tight, not terribly tight, very very snug fitting.  I think if my biceps were any bigger, there might be some problems (blame my years of other physical activities).  However, what did make the sleeve more uncomfortable for me was the elastic cuff on the bicep side.  The wrist side elastic sleeve (the longer one I so determined) is fine, but the bicep side is simply too tight on my arm.  Either I got massive arms, larger than they anticipated for a size 2... or it just isn't big enough.  I could foresee shooting this perhaps maybe 30 minutes or so before it would start to be problematic for me.

In terms of what it does, it does it well, I have no problems in releasing and not collapsing, or losing engagement of my active muscles.  I don't know how well I will do with an arrow or aiming, but that isn't something I can do inside my house at the moment.

Suggestions for Astra to improve their product:

1) The most important one in my opinion, widen the straps significantly.  They should be several times wider if possible, and can be folded over in the segment not on the sleeve where the metal clips attach to.  If they are still too wide, use a solid ring that the straps go through before they are stitched, that the clip can be used on without too much hassle.  The thin straps is really the killer negative.

They are just 13mm wide each.  That's a strain of 20lb per strap for me assuming equal load.  Assuming about a 10cm long strap contact length, that is just over 10cm^2, or 2lb per cm^2, or nearly 900g per cm^2, Do your calculations and it comes to 12.8psi (pounds/square inch).  Is that a lot?  Well, it is nearly 1 atmospheric pressure (14psi), and in range of a car turbocharger boost pressure.... (6-15psi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pounds_per_square_inch#Magnitude).  Personally, I think that's a lot.....

2) Make the clip a little larger.  While I didn't mention it, I found operating the clip a little fiddly because of its size.  If you watch the demonstration video carefully (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5zi-iOa0z0), there is a brief fumble at 18 seconds in, and once again at 1:10.  It is far easier to clip the clip on, than it is to take the clip off.  A larger sized clip would help this problem.

3) Mark, or mention in the manual, orientation for wearing the sleeve.  Its not hard to do really, makes a difference so someone doesn't put it on backwards and go d'oh, I feel really dumb....

4) Make the bicep cuff larger.  The measurement of the difference between of the wrist and bicep cuffs is 5mm.  Assuming it is the same material so the stretch factor is the same, I can say, my upper arm is way bigger than my wrist, way more than 5mm.  Comfort?  Make the cuff larger please.

So, there are some of my suggestions.  Is it likely that they will be implemented just because of my opinion?  Not likely.  Will I likely get any feedback from my review?  Who knows.  When I get back from Nationals in a few weeks, I'll put the size 1 to use on the guys at the club and see their comments.

I won't give the product a numerical value, it really has no point or purpose.  Would I recommend it, taking in all of the factors (price, functionality), I would have to say, only if you had the money to spend and you didn't have one available to try first.

I hope you found this review informative, and anyone who has one, I'd love to read your comments (you can leave them on this post) about your experiences about them, or email me directly at flehrad[at]gmail[dot]com if you prefer.

As for Astra Archery, if you read this, I hope it puts some food for thought if you have future revisions for product development.

Tried to work on more form today, with face/jaw contact, was able to get it at times, and center of face alignment.  However, at long distance, with a turnover between 70m and 50m, my arrows were skewing differently (long distance left, short distance right).  Height wise, I was shooting solid groups at all distances, though the groups seemed to be a bit lower than yesterday, either it is location differences, or arm drop or something...  But I'm happy with the group sizes.

I got home and adjusted the sight bar vertical rack so I hope that it may fix up the left/right distance skew (the most typical reason).  It was shooting fairly straight before, but this last week I did accidentally knock the sight rack twice that might have jarred it off center.  Will see how it shoots at the different distances now.

Worked on hand position today at anchor, with elevating elbow of draw arm to 'wrap' around the chin more.  I found that I was able to not have to concentrate on string alignment in my sight picture and still group reasonably well.  Wrapping the hand around the chin ramus did work in providing consistency, but when I was getting tired, I was reverting back to old habits.

Started to shoot the SOPA 144 arrow round.  I picked the F90 round as practice for Nationals, but with estimated winds speeds upto 50km/hr, it was a ridiculous shoot.  For 90m, I ended up aiming about a foot off the target entirely to the right to be blown across onto the target.  It was amusing to watch the arrows hook left after being launched to the right of the target.  Unfortunately for me, shooting at 70m in the same conditions just wasn't enjoyable and I was feeling that it was causing my form to suffer, so I decided to DNF the event.

I was pretty happy with the general group sizes I was obtaining.  Due to the wind, it was a bit to aim well, and especially at 90m, the shift of arrows was quite significant from aiming in the gold to being blow off the target to the left.  Otherwise it wasn't too bad.

One of the things I have noticed, especially today, is that with the Carbon Blades setup, I can't tell how windy it is if there are no wind flags on the target.  The wind today was out there, but being in my jacket, no flag, and the blades, I couldn't really gauge the wind well.  The winds were gusting sufficiently to be pushing my groups from the gold into the blue constantly.  In brief lulls of wind, my sight settings did group where they should have, and at times I had very tight vertical lines of groups, all to the left of center.

I was actually shooting okay in terms of group size when I was able to push my concentration, but at other times had terrible scatter.  The feedback though from shooting with cold fingers, a cold face, and having a jacket sleeve on (compared to not having a jacket on my bowarm) probably made me feel like I was shooting worse, and so fed back and turned into me shooting worse.  While 144 arrows isn't a lot, I shot them straight through without a break, and so am feeling the muscle tension quite a bit right now, and my right shoulder is tender, in its usual spot.

Not much to comment on the shooting in terms of technique, it was pretty mediocre.

Put in some more 90m practice today, it went okay, still being pushed around somewhat with the wind today though found it harder to shoot today possibly being a little stiff from yesterdays shooting in the cold.

70m shooting went well I felt, in that when the pin was dead on and I had a clean release, it went where it was aimed.  In terms of groups, I was happy with the general scatter, with the odd outlier as usual, scoring a 291.  I have to find a way to stay relaxed but yet able to maintain good muscle tension control.

The wind made it interesting to shoot the 90m today, but I put down a few ends at 50m and 70m to check sight settings for this weekend's QRE at Northern coming.

I split a set of arrows so that 2 were fletched with Spin Wings white (as my arrows normally are), 2 with blue Eli Vanes fletched normally, and 2 with blue Eli Vanes fletched using the fold-back method (as how my spinnies are done).  I wanted to test their flight characteristics, to see if there were actually any differences between them or not.

At 50m and 70m, they grouped all tightly together (as tight as my groups generally are lol, 50m all in the 9 ring) and certainly at 50 and 70m there were no obvious deviations in left/right nor up/down scatter.  90m with the wind made it pretty hard to really say if there was any differences.  There is a price difference of $5 between the two, with my supplier of Eli Vanes being the more expensive, but that said, they do have a nice look to them when done on the fold-back, I really don't like the conventional method at all.

In terms of form today, 90m shooting was the most comfortable and relaxed that I have ever shot 90m.  I don't know if it is just the lower shooting weight than previously, or if form has made it easier/better to shoot, but they were going through quite nicely today.  Unfortunately though I have still insufficient bow arm control for steady aiming (but it is much better with the pin I feel), and at times a panic release on the clicker so I punch through the release causing bad shots.  Other than that though I definitely feel I have made progress.

Shot the first QRE for May today, in much better conditions than yesterday.  I was hoping for better scores and after the first session, I was down a bit with only a 285 (cf 288 yesterday), so it was going well enough.  In the second half however things were going a little strange in I was shooting a poor end, good end, poor end and so forth, and in the 5th end I was at 240, where my shooting lane partner said I needed a 60 and I'd get the 300.  Well I certainly gave it a good go at it and finished off with a 57.  I was pretty happy with that.  What it does tell me though is I really can shoot those scores if I can just make my consistency better from end to end, and not just between each arrow.

In the process today though, I must remember to extend my bow arm and lock it down before the draw, and ensure adequate lean forwards to accentuate the feel of the shoulders when in use.
